The "I.C.E. Unit"
By Kurt Kressin - Wisconsin, USA - Posted on 22 August 2003
I.C.E.
Unit = Integrated Car Entertainment Unit...
This is where it all started...An innocent glove box, stripped
from its dwelling only to be mutated into...well you'll see...
Oh yeah, and those wires, talk about a mess load of wires.
Thank god my dash has lots of empty space in it...It takes
a total of 8 different wires to make this creature fully
functional...
Another Handy feature of this glove box is its two piece
design...It makes it much easier to run the power button,
and LEDs...It was also handy for cutting out the motherboard
footprint for the inner lining...
Hah...This was a mod that was made after the completion
of the beta unit...It took less then 5 minutes for the beta
unit to overheat and lockup...So, the solution was to cut
out as much plastic as one can but still keep the structural
integrity of the glove box...Yee Haw!!!
As you can tell, the Power LED and Hard Drive LED were extremely
easy to wire through the front latch of the glove box...Ironically
they are the exact length to reach the block on the motherboard...
Yeah Dawg...Check this out, the reset button from an old
Packard Bell neatly tucked inside the left side of the latch...With
a little hot glue, one can do anything!!!
Check out the size of this beast...It's processor is an
embedded 1Ghz VIA low power processor with video decoding
built in...If you take a look at the memory slot It gives
you a good idea of how small this board is...
Don't be confused by its size...This Monster's got the options...From
6-Channel Audio output, FireWire, USB 2, Digital audio, composite
and S-Video output, IDE 133, DDR333 and a PCI slot...
